WOOD (EXPECTATIONS (Wood I; semester course) (W2-4; 1 year)
Morro Bay High School (Instructor Mr. Repucci) (Ext 2606)
OBJECTIVES The students will:
1. become familiar with the basic functions of the hand and power tools used in woodworking.
2. gain a general understanding of wood technology, materials, joinery, and fasteners.
3. gain a interest in woodworking and related fields.
PROJECTS and COST
There will be two small hand tool projects and one machine tool project ($10-$25 depending on kind of wood) Standard stains and finishes will be available to each student but paint brushes and any unusual finishes need to be purchased by the student. Coping saw blades, band saw blades, router bits and drill bits can be easily damaged if misused. Each student can check out these items to use on their projects and is responsible for their care.
Any waste of materials, damage of equipment or machinery will carry a monetary charge for repair or replacement. Something as harmless as tapping a pointed pencil or chisel into the wooden table tops over time can severely damage the tops. Any tapping, scraping, chiseling, scratching, or marring of the table tops no matter how slight will require that the table top is completely sanded. If the top is severely damaged it must be replaced. Students can sand the table top for a minimum of one hour depending on damage or pay $30.00 and hour to have the top repaired by repair personnel. Demonstrations will be provided on appropriate use of the equipment. A tape measure is not required (yardsticks are provided) but having one will make the job easier. Also bring an extra pencil for your locker.
SECURITY
Each student will be paired up with a locker partner and provided a lock and locker to secure their projects. Larger lockers are also available for the larger projects. It is the students responsibility to secure their own project at all times. They should work only on what they need and keep the rest in their locker and locked DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PROJECTS OR PERSONAL ITEMS LAYING AROUND THE SHOP OR ON THE TABLES. Write your name on all pieces of your wood. It is not a valid reason to tell me that your project was taken or lost. You will have to start over again if you loose your project.
SAFETY
A major objective of Morro Bay High School’s Expected School Wide Learning Results (ESLRS) is to promote a sense of responsibility in each student. This is especially important in a shop class where being irresponsible can cause physical harm to oneself or others. Running a safe shop is every ones responsibility and safety is never negotiated, or compromised. APPROVED SAFETY GLASSES/GOGGLES ARE REQUIRED AND MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES IN THE SHOP. Eye protection can be purchased athardware store, Rite Aid, Auto stores, or lumber yards.
Failure to follow these safety rules will result in one or all of the following consequences (extra clean up duties, extra writing, termination of shop privileges, detention, check, or referral. Closed toed shoes are required in the shop. A safety test will be given to each student and the student must pass the test with 100% before they can begin work. The test may be taken over and over again until completion. Safety guide are available for preview
Please have your glasses by the next class.
ACADEMICS
Each class period will have some form of lectures, film or demonstrations along with time to work on a project. During these lecture, film, and demonstrations it is expected that the students should be taking notes (ESLRS). Quizzes and tests will come from these notes. You are expected to bring a three ring binder and pencil to class each day. Notes will be collected periodically for a grade. There will not be any homework except for studying for the tests. All projects must be done in the shop during shop time and not taken home as homework. Each student will have a minimum of one day as tool monitor.
TARDIES
The first three tardies excused or unexcused are free each tardy beyond the three will require a three page hand written research paper, due by the end of the week. Failure to turn in the paper will drop the final quarter grade by a half grade For example if your final grade was an A and you got four tardies your final grade would be a A-
Late work: Any late work will drop that assignment by one full grade. An A will be dropped to a B. There will be a cut off date on late work.

Makeup labs If you are in sports and will miss a lot of classes you may consider taking the class another semester. There is no easy way to make up miss lab time. Projects can not be done at home and lunch time is too short to get much done. On Tue and Thu I can not stay after school. YOU MUST ARRANGE WITH ME MEETING TIMES WAY BEFORE THE END OF THE GRADING PERIODS.
Test /Quizzes: It is the responsibility of the student to check with the teacher about any missed work on the day he/she returns to school. Missed quizzes must be made-up within the first week after returning and can be made-up during lunch, or by appointment with the teacher.
Production-. If you come to class with a pencil and binder, and are working on your assignments every day you will be given 3 participation points a day. Zero points for the day will be given to students that are unprepared to work (forgot pencil, glasses, shoes, or notebook), talking, doing other homework, wasting time, and/or on task for only part of the period. Grades are greatly affected by absenteeism
DISCIPLINE:
The Morro Bay High School discipline policy will be followed (Please see the students handbook).
CLASS RULES:
In order to maintain a constructive, safe, and productive environment, the following rules will apply.
1. Students must be in their seat, quiet, and prepared to work when the tardy bell rings. Failure to follow this rule will result in a tardy.
After third tardy 2 grade points will be deducted per additional tardy
2. Students will show respect to all people in the class. Raise your hand if you have a question.
3. All projects must be approved. Working on an un-approved project may result in a suspension. Do not operate or touch equipment
without permission.
4. No food, drink, or gum is permitted in the classroom or the shop at all. Food can damage equipment.
- Stepping out either the front or back door of the shop without permission will result in a cut.
It is expected that your are on task daily working on a project.. It is also expected that if you finish a project early that you will start another one soon. You will have due dates for each phase of your project.
Projects that are not glued together, sanded, and finished will be considered incomplete (59% or less) and this will greatly hurt your grade. Grading Scale 90-100%=A 80-89%=B 70-79%=C 60-69%=D 59% and below =F
Your grade will be based on how many points you accumulate at the end of the semester. To determine your grade divide your points by the total points of the class. Each assignment may vary in point values.
Wood joints = 25% Projects = 25%
Class-work / quizzes = 15% Final Exam & Clean up = 20%
Performance scores = 15 %
(Performances: evaluated by observation, work logs, and progress checks by pass/fail )
Projects can take the entire semester to do. Therefore all progress reports will be based on Project progress checks, binders, quizzes and tests,
